Solitary Confinement – Brandy Chicken with Wood Ear and Goji Berries 鸡酒

Did you know that the Chinese celebrate the New Year for a whole fortnight? Fifteen days to be exact. So technically, I’m not too late in wishing everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous year of the goat.

With the new year comes new life. And in this case, literally. One of my best friends is expecting her first child in mid-April *YAY!!!*  As a first-time mum, she naturally has a lot of worries and concerns about how she’s going to cope when the baby arrives. One of her biggest immediate concerns is not being able to find someone to help her with her confinement. For my non-chinese readers who are wondering what she’s being punished for, she’s not. Though it can sometimes feel like you are being punished. Confinement is the chinese practice of Continue reading Solitary Confinement – Brandy Chicken with Wood Ear and Goji Berries 鸡酒

My favourite kitchen gadget – Hainanese Chicken Rice

You know how Buzzfeed has all these lists of neat little things you need to have in your kitchen/bathroom/car/purse/water bottle? I thought I’d write my own little list and share with you my favourite gadgets.

So I looked up “kitchen gadgets” while writing this and OH MY GOD! I can’t believe the things they sell these days. Go on, I dare you to look it up yourself. I mean, really? A banana peeler?? Really?? The site says it’s a gadget designed with kids in mind, but I say, teach our kids to peel a banana.  If a monkey can do it, so can our kids. I’d like to think that my kids are not any less intelligent than a monkey. Although sometimes I’m not so sure myself…….

How hot can you go? – Ayam Rica Rica (Indonesian Chilli Chicken)

Picture this. You’re out to dinner with a couple of friends and you decide to go for a nice Asian meal. You’re placing your orders and then you hear a friend say, “Could you make that extra spicy, please? Thanks”. You start to roll your eyes, only to catch the waiter rolling his. Sound familiar? Everyone has a friend like that. That friend ( usually asian ) whose tongue just can’t be beat by the Scoville scale. There is NO dish too hot or spicy for them. Or at least, that is what they want you to think.

Ayam Rica Rica

I used to be that friend. When I first moved to Switzerland, nothing was spicy enough and everyone was challenging me. How hot could I go? And to be honest, that challenge wasn’t hard to beat here in the land of Chocolates. My dad is from Indonesia, so I grew up eating spicy food. I had a distinct advantage. You should see the way my family eat chilli. They don’t pair chilli with their food. Hell no! They pair food with their chilli! I’m the weak one of the bunch.  Continue reading How hot can you go? – Ayam Rica Rica (Indonesian Chilli Chicken)

Procrastination is queen – Chilli Chicken with Basil and Coconut Cream

I missed my own deadline…… [Insert random profanity]…… The plan was to put this post up by Sunday morning, but as usual, procrastination is queen in this household. I somehow managed to find more than one excuse to not finish this post; “the picture is out of focus”, “I don’t know what to write about”, “I’m soooo sleepy”, etc. You get the picture.

To be fair, I had started writing 3 posts by Saturday. But none of them got finished. Again, various excuses I’m not going to bore you with but it all boils down to procrastination. I’ve always said that if there was a competition held to find the biggest procrastinator, I wouldn’t win it. Not because there are bigger procrastinators out there, but because I would put off signing up for it till it’s too late and thus, not qualify. Oh, the irony.

It’s a horrible trait to have and I pray to God that my children would not take after me in this. It has been my New Year’s resolution for the past years (I’ve lost count how many) to procrastinate less. You could argue why not resolve to not procrastinate at all, but who are we kidding here? It’s never happened and it probably never will. Much like my resolution to eat less and exercise more (I’ve been putting that off too). I even put off satisfying my cravings.

Chilli Chicken with Basil and Coconut cream

I did manage to satisfy one craving recently though. Chilli chicken with basil and coconut cream. Continue reading Procrastination is queen – Chilli Chicken with Basil and Coconut Cream
